About Us

Our Story

We use the law to challenge injustice:
In 2008, a group of human rights activists and activist lawyers teamed up with renowned public-spirited individuals to:

  1. Use the law and justice system to challenge injustice.
  2. Create a space for defenders of human rights, climate and environmental justice activists, young lawyers, and paralegals to access training, coaching, mentorship, and accompaniment.

CLT stands in the gap for those who suffer indignities and infractions caused by omissions, negligence, and inaction of public officials or corporates — or from the might of the state arising from unjust policies, their poor implementation, or, in some cases, the absence of robust policies altogether on issues that continue to shame human decency.

CLT Founders:
  • Julius Ogogoh — Executive Director
  • Nicholas Kamwendwa — L.L.B (Hons) NBI, Dip (KSL)
  • Patrick Ochieng — Head of Programs / Public Intellectual
  • Pius Odero — Senior Finance & Operations Officer

We work with civil society partners on behalf of individuals and communities across Kenya to defend the Constitution and hold monopoly providers and powerful state institutions accountable.
CLT provides free legal services to individuals — especially youth, women, persons with disabilities (PwDs), and other marginalized communities.
In the broader context, CLT undertakes strategic litigation to advance climate and environmental justice, human rights, accountable public and corporate governance, access to education and healthcare, and the advancement of the constitutional foundation of our democracy.

We tackle the most pressing human rights issues of our time.

CLT aims to be the largest public interest law centre in the region.
We believe in the transformative Constitution through which the window for strategic litigation and citizen advocacy was flung wide open. Our goal is to build a trusted, well-funded, and operationally sound learning organization as part of our core mission.
We continue to uphold the rule of law, constitutional democracy, and the expansion of access to legal resources for those without representation — ultimately promoting equality, accountability, and good governance.
These efforts serve to advance human rights jurisprudence and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of Kenya and the African continent.
